- I want to get dreads! Can I use Willie's to get them going?
-
Absolutely! The strong hold wax helps bind individual hairs and tightly hold them together enabling the hair to 'lock' naturally. It's really important during the early stages of growing locks that you keep the scalp in good condition also which will encourage strong healthy growth. - Are these products only for dreads?
-
Willie's Dread Waxes have been designed specifically with dreads in mind. But we didn't wanna leave out those of you with related styles like corn-rows, braids, twists or you're rockin' an Afro! Your hair and scalp still needs to be conditioned and the soft textured Caribbean Bliss Hair and Body Balm is fantastic for this. Just work the wax through the hair and style as desired and in between times, massage into the scalp to nourish hair from the roots. If you have thick, curly or ethnic hair the Spritz's are great to tames frizzies, define curls and add shine. If you have an irritated scalp then definitely try the Scalp Treatment. Check out our Care and Maintenance Section for further info.
- How does the Scalp Treatment work?
-
Willie's Itchy & Flaky Scalp Wax works very effectively. It's much softer than the dread wax and is designed just for the scalp. It will melt in your hand and spread easily so it's really easy to apply to the skin with your fingertips. Olive oil is renouned for its use for dandruff and combined with the other nutrient rich ingredients like hemp, coconut and shea butter it does a wonderful job on moisturising a dry scalp. Essential oils of geranium and cedarwood have been specifically chosen as they balance the oil/sebum production of the skin, which deals with having a dry scalp in the first place. They also stimulate hair growth which is great when you've got locks. Once the scalp is balanced and moisturised - no more flakes which equals no more itch!
- Will the wax build up in my hair?
-
Any hair product can build up, but if you wash your hair weekly with a good shampoo and hot water then it will wash out. You may not get all the wax out in the first wash. If this is the case maybe you used too much - like anything, don't over-do it. If you find a bit of wax is still there after a wash, then no need to re-wax when it's dry. Just twist the roots and palm roll the length and you're done. In time as your locks get established, you won't need as much wax as it will only be used at the roots for maintenance.
- I didn't think you were supposed to wash dreadlocks!
-
And why not?? In fact keeping them clean can help the locking process in the early days (just don't use conditioner)! Dreads attract dirt and dust from the environment and the scalp gets oily - just like everyone else. Let's start to change the mis-conception out there that dreads aren't clean! Wash them, wax them, palm roll them, protect them and your locks will look healthy, clean and amazing!
- Why don't you use the Dread Wax on wet or damp hair?
-
These products act as a barrier to seal in moisture. Trapping water/dampness in your locks makes them a breeding ground for mildew and bacteria resulting in stale/musty-smelling locks.
- Can I put it in the microwave to soften it a bit?
-
Wellll I guess you could, but it's not recommended. The radiation emitted from microwaves can destroy and alter the chemical make-up of the products (just like microwaves do with food). So in order to maintain the nutrient value in our products - for the sake of your awesome dreads - don't nuke it! Remember the wax will soften when worked in your fingers, but if it's really cold and you're struggling to get it out of the pot just put it in the hot water cupboard for a bit and allow it to get back to room temperature. On the flip side if it's a scorching Kiwi summer, you can keep it in the fridge.
- How come sometimes the wax is harder than other times?
-
Willie's products have all been handmade in small batches with the highest quality natural ingredients. As no stabilisers have been used, our products can soften or harden slightly in hot or cold weather.
- The Dread Wax is quite hard to get out of the pot. Can't it be a bit softer?
-
Ok - first of all you'll need to use your thumbnail to scrape it out and once you work it in your fingers a bit it will soften enough for you to twist into your hair. The reason it has a strong hold is to make sure the hair binds together tightly and stays that way. A softer consistency would be too 'silky' so it wouldn't hold and this would DE-TANGLE the hair instead of KNOTTING it. Softer wax like Caribbean Bliss is great for highly textured hair or established locks but not for starting locks.
